Why read it

The founding text of economics — but Smith was a moral philosopher first. The invisible hand is one paragraph in a book mostly about labour, specialisation, and the conditions under which markets serve or fail society. Read Books I and IV to understand what Smith actually argued, which is subtler than most people who invoke him realise.
